2010 – 2012, Natural Research Projects Limited, Lewis Wave Array, Baseline Bird Surveys – Year 2 Surveys

Abstract

This report summarises the results for the months April to July 2012 of Year 2 baselinesurvey work undertaken to further inform Lewis Wave Power’s proposed wave power
development in north-west Lewis. The April to July 2012 period broadly coincides with the
breeding season of seabirds. Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) and Marine Scotland
Licensing Operations Team (MS LOT) made a specific request to be provided with a
summary of results for diver species during the breeding season of year 2. This report also
summaries results for other surface-diving seabird species, marine mammal species and
basking shark. Although these other species were not identified on the basis of the first
year’s baseline survey results to be of particular concern to the proposed development, it is
nevertheless useful to confirm this now that year 2 data are available.
This interim report follows a similar interim report covering the winter period (November to
March) of Year 2 which was provided to MS LOT and SNH in May 2012. It also follows the
Year 1 Bird Surveys Technical Report (NRP 2011) that formed a technical appendix to the Environmental Statement (Lewis Wave Power Limited, March 2012) which was submitted to
MS LOT in support of a consents application in March 2012.
Survey work is on-going and the second year of data collection will end in September 2012.
A full report of the Year 2 results will be available thereafter.
