Understanding the potential effects of wave energy devices on kelp biotopes

Abstract

At present we have little evidence upon which to justify our position in relation to the likely impacts (positive, negative, neutral or unknown) of wave energy devices on kelp beds or associated species including SAC and SPA QFs that rely of these biotopes. Furthermore, opinion as to the severity or otherwise of any impact is divided both internally in SNH and externally. This project therefore seeks to resolve this conflict and provide a steer to help SNH provide sound advice to both Marine Scotland as the regulator and to individual developers.
