2010 – 2011, Natural Research Projects Limited, Lewis Wave Array, Baseline Bird Surveys – Year 1 Reports

To date a full year of monthly baseline survey data (September 2010 to September 2011) have been collected and analysed by Natural Research Projects Ltd (Jackson and Hulka 2011: Lewis Wave Array Year 1 Bird Surveys Technical Report). These surveys cover the areas identified by Lewis Wave Power for possible wave power development, namely the stretches of coastline located at Siadar/Mealabost and Labost in NW Lewis.
This report package contains the provisional conclusions of the year 1 survey where the main conclusions are summaries, and the tecnnical report for the year 1 survey.

2010 – 2012, Natural Research Projects Limited, Lewis Wave Array, Baseline Bird Surveys – Data

Two years of baseline survey work have been undertaken to further inform Lewis Wave Power’s proposed wave power development in north-west Lewis. The April-July period broadly coincides with the breeding season of seabirds. This survey particularly covers diver species during the breeding season, surface-diving seabird species, marine mammals and basking sharks. The other species in addition to the divers were not identified on the basis of the first year’s baseline survey results to be of particular concern to the proposed development, but it is nevertheless useful to confirm this wit the 2 year data.

SeaGeneration (Wales) Ltd (SeaGen Wales), a partnership of Marine Current Turbines Ltd (MCT) and RWE npower Renewables (RWE nrl), is submitting an application for the offshore consents necessary to construct and operate a 10 megawatt (MW) rated capacity demonstration array of tidal stream turbines. The Skerries Tidal Stream Array, hereafter referred to as the Project, is to be situated 850m off the north coast of Anglesey in a tidal race area known as the Skerries.
The Environmental Statement (ES) presents the findings of the detailed Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) that has been carried out for the Project. The assessment work has covered all of the potential impacts of the Project on the surrounding environment and has been carried out by a team of leading environmental specialists. Planning permission for the onshore aspects of the development will be sought at a later date from the Isle of Anglesey County Council and therefore the outline details only of these aspects are included within the Environmental Statement.

It was agreed by the Skerries Science Group in February 2014 that the initial phase of the pre-installation monitoring would be to undertake a 4-month vantage point pilot survey to trial survey methods for pre-installation bird surveys to understand if the VP methodology can acquire appropriate data
This technical report presents the results of the 4-month ornithological pre-installation pilot study undertaken by Natural Research (Projects) Ltd ( NRP) in the 2014 seabird breeding season (mid-April to mid-August 2014). NRP was asked to undertake this study because of it recognised expertise and experience in ornithological impact assessment and associated surveys for wet renewable (tide and wave) energy developments

2013, Osiris Projects, Skerries Tidal Array, Geophysical Survey_Borehole Locations

On the instructions of Sea Generation (Kyle Rhea) Ltd, Osiris Projects werecommissioned to undertake a geophysical survey covering the proposed Kyle Rhea
current turbine development site. The survey was undertaken using Osiris Projects own dedicated survey vessel, MV So
Fyne during the period 4th May to 8th May 2010. High-resolution side scan sonar, swath multi-beam, single beam bathymetry,
magnetometer and sub bottom profiler data were acquired along all survey lines, in order
to accurately map the seabed within the survey area. This package contains images of the borehole positions overlying the geophysical survey outputs, along with a description of seabed characteristics in the area. N.B. The borehole survey was conducted subsequent to the geophysical survey and the associated borehole reports and data are not present in this series.
